Hi everyone. I have been spending my Saturdays with Asheville Food Not Bombs for the past year cooking and then serving yummy vegetarian food at Pritchard Park to anyone who wants it. This project was restarted by a group of primarily Warren Wilson College students but has since expanded to include a variety of cookers, servers, cleaners...and not to mention picnic-goers! Overall, Food Not Bombs in Asheville has become a multi-generational, family-oriented, activist gathering of sorts where people from many different socio-economic backgrounds blend with others who they might not interact with on a day-to-day basis and share a meal and some conversation together. *PLEASE CROSS-POST THIS MESSAGE TO ANY ALTERNATIVE LISTSERVES FOR ASHEVILLE!*
Since September, people have kept the servings going smoothly and easily, with around 3-8 people coordinating the pick-up, cooking, serving, and cleaning. While we used a kitchen at Warren Wilson College for the first seven months, we have since relocated to a house in Montford for more centralized cooking and cleaning. A typical Saturday is as following:
The pick-up crew picks up the produce from the French Broad Food Co-op at 11:30am. We have two bike carts that attach to people's bikes and have been transporting food from the Co-op and to Pritchard Park using them. The kitchen crew starts cooking when the food arrives and cooks until about 3:15pm. The food is then transported to Pritchard Park and served about 3:30pm. Bread comes from City Bakery via our friend Adam at 4pm. We are usually done serving about 5pm and the cleaning takes place back at the Montford house.
In the upcoming four weeks, we are going to be severely short-peopled! Many of our usual FNBers are either traveling or have recently left Asheville for an indefinite period of time. I will be gone starting June 19th until July 17th. If you are interested in getting involved in Food Not Bombs - for either a short period or time or beyond - NOW IS THE TIME!!! We especially need people to do the pick-up, cooking, serving, and cleaning for the following days:
-June 23rd
-June 30th
-July 7th
-July 14th
I am trying to put together a rough outline of folks who can committ to a task before I head out so that this project does not fall down while some of us are gone. If you are interested in helping out, please contact me at 303-929-9713 or jamim@riseup.net and I will give you more information!!
