Home Demonstrations Against HLS Customers in Chapel Hill

drop HLS!

featured image

FROM THE NEWSWIRE: Protesters confront HLS customer Quintiles and supplier, Staples. Huntingdon Life Sciences, known as Life Sciences Research in the U.S., is the world's most notorious contract testing laboratory which kills 500 animals daily to test agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and common household items like food colorings and artificial sweeteners. Employees have been caught on videotape punching 5 month old beagle puppies in the face, documented breaking animal welfare laws, admitting to falsifying scientific data...They have locations in Britain and in New Jersey.

Saturday May 10, 2008

Today a group of protesters held another noisy demonstration outside of Staples with a bullhorn, letting them know that this campaign will not end until they end their association with HLS. A number of people stopped to speak with protesters about HLS and Staples, voiced their appreciation and wished us good luck. One man said he would complain to the store and might return his order because of it.

Afterwards, protesters made a stop in the neighborhood of Quintiles Vice President John Goodacre and his wife Gillian at 400 Deming Rd. in Chapel Hill, NC (919) 967-2747. Activists fliered his neighborhood and went door-to-door speaking to his neighbors about Quintiles' connection to HLS. One neighbor was disgusted after hearing about her friend John's connection to animal cruelty at Huntingdon, saying she was, "going to be sick." A little while later, John made an appearance to fetch his mail and was greeted by a group of protesters standing next to his mailbox waiting to talk with him. He tried his best to be amicable with us, but even with his British accent and PR evasions of topic, we did not let him stray from the real matter at hand. John claimed Quintiles has no connection to HLS, but we told him we would be back-and back again-at his house, and all of his co-workers' houses, until their business made a statement vowing never to use HLS; and, if they are not contracting with them, that demand should be met easily. We'll be waiting to hear back, John.

The next demo was at the house of another Quintiles Vice President, Derek Winstantley and his wife Louise at 104 N. Boundary St. Chapel Hill, NC, right in the heart of the UNC college town on graduation day. As a matter-of-fact, Derek was busy having a quaint lunch with his daughter(?) out on the porch when we walked up holding placards to talk to him about Quintiles' business with HLS. After a not so polite conversation, Derek decided to call the police, so we moved on, but not before his afternoon was disturbed and all his rich neighbors received flyers about him.

Please take the time, to help out with these recent demonstrations by contacting Quintiles with their online form. Ask them to make a statement saying they will never use Huntingdon Life Sciences or Life Sciences Research. If Quintiles is not contracting with them currently, then there should be no reason why they cannot make a statement.

I asked once before but never got an answer.. How can I be notified of upcoming actions? I again would've loved to join in these events but I didn't hear anything about them. Could someone please post a suggestion on who I could contact to get me in the loop with the demos in the Triangle and surrounding areas? Thanks!

The Asheville Indymedia newswire is anonymous if the posters don't provide contact info, so there's no way to contact the organizers directly. Maybe contact the people who run closehls.net and ask for how to get in touch with North Carolina people?
