![]() Today a group of North Carolina students and members of Asheville Rising Tide descended on Duke Energy Headquarters in Charlotte, NC to protest against their proposed 800mw Cliffside coal power plant. Despite police and private security already on the scene two students managed to lock the front entrance shut with a bike lock to send the message of “No New Coal” to Duke Energy. Police managed to intervene before the two were able to lock themselves to the doors and were arrested within minutes after refusing to move, however the door remained locked after they were put in police custody. Building a new coal plant in the face of cataclysmic climate change is setting us on a path in the wrong direction. We need to stop burning coal now and create truly sustainable ways of producing energy. Today was the last day of public comment for the Cliffside coal plant’s air quality permit. Please support these two individuals who made their public comment with civil disobedience by making a donation to their legal fund. |
